As well as attending to repairs and breakdowns, we also refurbish some of our larger components in-house.
Presently, we’re rebuilding a drop box for Volvo A25D / A30D dump-trucks. Above you will see images of one unit undergoing refurbishment, and another unit we completed previously.

We have been awarded the work to completely overhaul the engine and transmission on two of these massive machines.

Reassembly of the transmission using a new casing (there were cracks in the original) cleanliness and attention to detail are critical.

Volvo TD122 engine ready to fit. We have rebuilt it as a KLE version which is the low emissions permutation.
Following the engine and transmission refit, the rest of the machine will have a thorough inspection and repairs will be undertaken as necessary with the owners approval. When this one is finished it will be taken back to the quarry and the second machine will arrive at our workshops for similar treatment.

We have been searching for a very long time for a suitable air-con unit for retro fitting. We have seen all sorts and they have either been too expensive, bulky or unsuitable in other ways. At long last we have found one – a Red Dot unit as can be seen from the photos. We think you will agree it is compact, lightweight and presentable.

Unit fitted on top of Volvo A35 Cab.

Almost as compact as a small suitcase.

Compressor neatly installed and driven from crank.

Vent and controls conveniently installed within cab roof.
Pricing is very reasonable, but differs on application and we have kits for various models of construction and agricultural machinery, so please ask Nigel for a quote on 01777 709533

This week we are attending to some faults on a Caterpillar 980G loading shovel. The hitch bearings are badly worn and we have to ‘line-bore’ the trunion plates to accept our manufactured weld-in bushes. When this is finished the replaceable bushes and bearings can be fitted. All-in-all a time-consuming and expensive repair, this could have been avoided with a more diligent maintainance regime.

Cab removed and inspecting damage.

Setting up line boring tool.

Steel swarf details the amount of steel removed.
Machine should be ready by the end of the week, following refurbishment of the loader frame quick-release latch.

Restoration is only a very small part of what we do! And as promised we are going to share some of the other projects we a currently working on…
This week we have been re-building an automatic transmission for Clifford Watts Ltd of East Yorkshire.

Truck being prepared for removal of transmission.

Disassembled parts, some will be re-used as it was only the hydraulic retarder that was faulty.

We will be bringing you more next week! If you want to find out more about our Workshop please visit our website.

Engine smoking is usually an indicator of underlying problems. Early diagnosis of machine problems can help prevent catastrophic failure.
If your plant machinery is smoking here are the possible causes: –
Excess black smoke at full load:(hot, unburned fuel) • Dirty primary / secondary air cleaner• Operating in too high a gear• Overfueling• Overloading• Faulty turbocharger
Blue smoke:(oil consumption) • Hours on engine• Worn rings/liners• Worn turbocharger seals• Worn valve products
White Smoke:(steam: water in combustion chamber)(or start-up: unburned fuel) • Leaking head gasket• Cracked head and/or liners• Faulty injector• Incorrect starting procedure• Incorrect fuel injection timing• Low quality fuel
Visit our workshop page for more advice and early warning indicators.

2010 started with most of UK under a foot of snow, Walker Plant hasn’t been an exception! Our low loader has looked very picturesque covered in snow. So far the Walker Plant offices and workshop have remained open, surrounded by heaters we have been happily watching snow from the windows, safe in the knowledge that we have a fleet of excavators available if we do get snowed in!

We are now actively encouraging our regular customers to overhaul their transmissions at 10000-12000hrs before risking expensive transmission failure.
Here is a picture of A30c transmission we overhauled recently at 12000hrs

This must be the epitome of impeccable timing, although the unit was functioning normally it was found to have severe damage to the pump. The unit would probably have only lasted a few more service hours when certain expensive failure would have occurred. The customer was pleased he made the decision to overhaul when he did as he saved about £3500!!!
If your pump is getting to 10000hrs strict attention to detail is required on the inside of the oil strainers/filters, this will give an insight as to the true condition of the transmission
